Information Technology Agreement Products

Trade and Tariffs

This sector is defined by products included within the Information Technology Agreement (ITA).

Information technology agreement products accounted for a little less than 6 percent of total U.S. non-textile industrial exports to Oman in 2003, totaling $21.9 million. Top U.S. exports in the sector are parts and accessories, transmission apparatus, and electrical apparatus for switching or protecting electrical circuits.

Oman exports of ITA products to the United States in 2003 were insignificant at approximately $16,000.

The United States is a signatory to the ITA, and thus imposes zero duties on these products.

Tariff Elimination

The U.S.-Oman FTA will eliminate all industrial tariffs in the United States and Oman within 10 years of implementation. Tariffs will be phased out according to three tariff elimination categories: 1) immediate elimination, 2) equal cuts over 5 years, and 3) equal cuts over 10 years.

The United States currently allows 74 percent of information technology agreement products to enter the country duty free. Upon implementation of the agreement, the remaining 26 percent will receive immediate duty free treatment.

While Oman currently allows less than 0.5 percent of ITA products to enter duty free, 100 percent of ITA imports from the United States will be duty free immediately upon implementation.
