Exports Support American Jobs
According to this report, a joint publication of the International Trade Administration and the Economics and Statistics Administration, the United States exported nearly $1.7 trillion in goods and services in 2008. These exports supported more than 10 million full- and part-time jobs and accounted for 12.7 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). This percentage of GDP represented by exports was the highest in nearly a century. Export-supported jobs in the United States rose from 7.6 million in 1993 to 10.3 million in 2008, an increase of 2.7 million jobs. This increase accounted for 40 percent of total job growth in the United States during this period. “The new record [level of GDP],” notes the report, “shows that the upward growth of trade in an expanding global market holds great opportunities for U.S. businesses whose leaders are thinking strategically about the future growth of their companies.”
