Obama Trade Official to Lead U.S. Delegation on Civil Nuclear Trade Policy Mission to Vietnam and China
Senior Officials from Energy and the White House to join representatives from 18 U.S. entities
WASHINGTON – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez today announced he will lead a civil nuclear trade policy mission to Vietnam and China, May 17-23. Dr. Pete Lyons, assistant secretary for nuclear energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, and Joyce Connery, the White House director for nuclear energy policy, will join Sánchez and representatives from 18 U.S. companies, law firms, and industry associations on the mission stops in Hanoi, Vietnam; Beijing; and Ningbo, China. This interagency delegation represents the U.S. government’s “TeamUSA” approach to civil nuclear engagement abroad by instituting and communicating high-level U.S. government support in a strategic and coordinated manner to support the U.S. civil nuclear industry.
“Vietnam and China are both steadily expanding their nuclear power programs, which presents abundant opportunities for U.S. civil nuclear companies,” Sánchez said. “The quality products, services, and technical expertise offered by the mission participants can be critical to our trading partners as they strive to meet their energy needs as we progress through the 21st century.”
Vietnam’s civil nuclear market is currently estimated to be worth $10 billion and is expected to grow to $50 billion by 2030. China’s nuclear industry is expected to grow to nearly $300 billion by 2020.

This trade mission advances President Obama’s National Export Initiative (NEI), which aims to double U.S. exports by the end of 2014, supporting economic and job growth, as well as the Department of Commerce’s Civil Nuclear Trade Initiative by assisting U.S. businesses in entering or expanding in international markets, and enhancing U.S. exports.
