Commerce Official to Lead Trade Mission to Chile
Assistant Secretary Nicole Lamb-Hale, 15 U.S. Firms to Visit Santiago
WASHINGTON – Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Manufacturing and Services Nicole Lamb-Hale today announced she will lead a renewable energy and energy efficiency trade policy mission to Chile, April 15-16. The U.S. delegation will include representatives from 15 U.S. firms, offering a broad range of solar, geothermal, biomass, hydropower, waste-to-energy, smart grid, and energy efficiency products and services.
“Chile has ambitious plans to improve energy efficiency and deploy renewable energy technologies,” Lamb-Hale said. “This trade mission is an important step in promoting the export of U.S. goods and services in order to help achieve Chile’s clean energy and energy efficiency goals. It’s a win-win situation for both the Chilean people and American businesses and workers.”

The mission further advances the goals of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Export Initiative (RE4I), which the Department of Commerce launched in support of the President’s goal of doubling exports by the end of 2014. The RE4I includes a focus on creating open and growing markets globally for U.S. renewable energy and energy efficiency exporters to do businesses.
Chile’s recently announced its National Energy Strategy, which contained six pillars: energy efficiency; renewable energy; traditional fossil fuels; smart grid; competition in electricity distribution; and regional electricity distribution. This mission demonstrates U.S. Government support for these goals.
The mission will also introduce participating companies to key Chilean Government officials, and provide opportunities to network and explore business opportunities with select private sector interests. Participating firms will gain market insights, make industry contacts, solidify business strategies, and advance specific projects with the goal of increasing U.S. exports to Chile in this critical industry sector.
The United States and Chile implemented a free trade agreement in 2004. Since that time, U.S. exports to Chile have increased by 600 percent. In 2012, Chile ranked as the United States’ 19th largest export market, with total exports of $18.9 billion.
