Chandra Brown Named Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing
WASHINGTON – The International Trade Administration (ITA) today announced that Chandra Brown will join the U.S. Department of Commerce as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing on March 18. In her capacity as Deputy Assistant Secretary, Brown will be responsible for identifying key factors affecting competitiveness and barriers to exports for more than 21 industry sectors.
“Chandra’s extensive experience as the president of an American manufacturing company will be invaluable as we develop strategies to sustain and strengthen manufacturing in the United States in order to support good-paying American jobs,” said Under Secretary for International Trade Francisco Sánchez. “Chandra’s successes show her determination, conviction, and first-hand experience overseeing the manufacturing of high-quality American products. She will be an important liaison to, and representative of, American manufacturers, and we are thrilled to welcome Chandra to ITA.”
As president of United Streetcars, LLC, Brown was responsible for securing federal funding to manufacture the first Buy American modern streetcars in the United States in the last 58 years. She traveled across the country demonstrating her commitment to the Buy American initiative and promoting streetcars and U.S. manufacturing.
In addition to her professional experience, Brown was appointed to the Oregon Business Development Commission in 2010, won the 2011 White House Champion of Change Award in Manufacturing, and has served as the Vice Chair of President Obama’s Manufacturing Council.
Manufacturing is responsible for 70 percent of private sector research and development in the United States, and represents 90 percent of U.S. patents. The United States has added nearly half a million manufacturing jobs after decades of loss.
