Under Secretary SÁnchez Administers Oath of Office to Import Administration Assistant Secretary
WASHINGTON – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez today administered the oath of office to Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Import Administration (IA) Paul Piquado at a ceremonial swearing-in at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Piquado has been serving in the role since his Senate confirmation on October 21, 2011. As part of the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, IA enforces U.S. trade laws and agreements to ensure that U.S. workers and industries have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.
“Paul Piquado brings a broad range of public and private sector experience to Commerce that provides him a great understanding of the trade remedy issues that U.S. firms competing in the global marketplace unfortunately face,” Sánchez said. “He will be a huge asset to the Commerce Department as we strive to achieve the goals of the President’s National Export Initiative.”
“The Import Administration’s activities are critically important to help safeguard jobs and support the competitive strength of American industry both in the United States and overseas,” Piquado said. “I look forward to ensuring that the laws and programs within IA’s jurisdiction are applied and enforced as fully and robustly as possible, and in an open and transparent manner.”
Piquado has served the Obama Administration with distinction as the Import Administration’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Negotiations since 2010. He previously served the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for five years as the executive director of the Office of Trade Policy for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and principal advisor to Governor Ed Rendell on international trade and investment policy matters. During this period Piquado also served as an advisor to the U.S. Trade Representative’s Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee on Trade.
Prior to serving the Commonwealth, Piquado worked as an attorney at Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP and Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy LLP, where he advised clients on multiple trade issues including international trade disputes and arbitrations. Piquado holds a J.D. from the New York University School of Law, an M.A.L.D. from the Tufts University Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy and a B.A. from Williams College.
