DATA CONFIRMS MANUFACTURING EXPORTS SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN AMERICAN JOBS
WASHINGTON – Exports of U.S. manufactured goods supported more than 6.8 million jobs in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Two of every nine jobs in the manufacturing sector are tied to exports. These 6.8 million jobs represented 5.9 percent of total private sector employment in the United States, or roughly one out of every 17 private sector jobs.
“I’m encouraged by the results of this report and understand the challenges that our manufacturing sector face,” said Nicole Y. Lamb-Hale, assistant secretary for manufacturing and services within the International Trade Administration. “Implementing the National Export Initiative will strengthen our ability to support U.S. companies that are expanding sales into new markets. The importance of exporting in sustaining and creating jobs cannot be overstated.
Manufacturing exports impact related industry sectors, such as services and transportation, demonstrating that expanding manufacturing exports leads to significant job growth.”
Manufactured goods accounted for nearly two-thirds of total U.S. exports and it is estimated that every billion dollars of manufactured exports supports more than 6,500 jobs in manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors.
Twenty-six states reported exports of manufactured goods supported more than 100,000 jobs in 2008, with two states registering more than 700,000 – California with 737,600 jobs, and Texas with 731,000. Other states with large numbers of jobs supported by manufactured exports included Ohio (362,200 jobs), Illinois (360,200), Michigan (269,900), Washington (258,300), Pennsylvania (258,200), Indiana (233,600), and New York (228,100), and North Carolina (208,600).
