The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 authorized Federal Agencies to accept volunteer services for students under certain condition. Volunteer service is limited to services performed by a student, with permission from the institution at which he/she is enrolled, as part of an agency program to provide an educational experience for the student.
Supervisors interested in recruiting a student volunteer:
Contact the student volunteer program coordinator on 202-482-3301 to set up an appointment date to review applications on file.
Review applications on file and interview candidates.
Notify the student volunteer program coordinator of selection.
Program Requirements
ITA policy requires that student volunteers be a U.S. citizen and the student should be enrolled full-time. If the student is enrolled half-time, written certification is required from the school indicating that the student meet half of the minimum full-time academic load.
Students should be at least age 16 or in the tenth grade.
Department policy requires written agreement between the operating unit, the education institutions, and the student (student volunteer program package).
Before the student begins the volunteer assignment, the supervisor must submit the following forms:

Student volunteer service is creditable for meeting qualification requirements for future Federal employment. Some participating schools which award academic credit for such service may require certification of volunteer service time.
