and
the International Trade Administration of
the United States Department of Commerce
and
the
Chilean
SubSecretariat of Telecommunications
Statement
of Intent on Telecommunications Policy Cooperation
August
30, 2000
The National
Telecommunications & Information Administration and the International
Trade Administration of the United States Department of Commerce
and the Chilean SubSecretariat of Telecommunications are pleased
to announce their intent to cooperate on bilateral telecommunications
policy issues. Taking into consideration the rapidly evolving nature
of telecommunications technologies and the fast-paced development
of new telecommunications services, such bilateral cooperation should
encourage and facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on
how our respective governments can best take advantage of and promote
these advances for the mutual benefit of our citizens.
The unique
policy questions raised by the convergence of media, the development
of broadband networks, and the ever-expanding capabilities and wide-spread
adoption of the Internet challenge our countries to continually
reevaluate our regulatory and policy perspectives to assure that
they best promote a fair and flexible market-based approach to telecommunications
development.
Thus, the National
Telecommunications & Information Administration and the International
Trade Administration of the United States Department of Commerce
and the Chilean SubSecretariat of Telecommunications propose to
cooperate on periodic visitor exchanges and ongoing information
exchanges via information technologies to increase awareness of
the latest telecom market, technological, and policy developments
in the United States of America and in Chile and to broaden the
benefits that come from the mutual exchange of ideas and information
regarding these developments.
