UNITED
STATES AND INDIA ANNOUNCE
PRIVATE-SECTOR
LED, E-COMMERCE PROGRAM
New Delhi,
India - The United States and India announced today a set of programs
that increases cooperation between U.S. and Indian public and private
sectors to promote e-commerce between our two countries. These programs
were developed in close consultation with the U.S. and Indian business
communities, and are an out-growth of the U.S.-India Commercial
Dialogue.
"We are working
with the Indian government and the private sector to empower more
Indian and American citizens through their connection to the Internet,"
Assistant Secretary Michael Copps said. "Small and medium-sized
businesses, in particular, can benefit from valuable opportunities
for education, government, health care services, and communication
available via the Internet."
Specifically,
elements of the expanded cooperation are expected to include:-
Getting Connected:
Increasing awareness of the benefits of e-commerce through:
Orientation
visits focused on policy and technology topics such as e-commerce,
e-government, and e-banking.
Seminars offering
small business the opportunity to assess their technology needs
and implement solutions using interactive diagnostic software.
Series of video
conferences and briefings between key U.S. and Indian government,
legislators, and private sector representatives, drawing on U.S.
and Indian experiences in the new economy and other topics identified
by the business community such as venture capital, start-ups, and
distribution.
Small Business
Program: In partnership with the private sector the two governments
will hold a series of seminars focusing on how to do business using
e-commerce. Special emphasis will be given to the legal, financial,
regulatory, and logistical issues related to bilateral trade and
various tools, techniques, and strategies for using the Internet
and e-commerce to participate in international trade.
Telecom/Information
Technologies Matchmaker Trade Delegation: Plan a trade mission to
identify and match U.S. companies with potential Indian business
partners in the IT and telecom industries.
