U.S.-AUSTRALIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT: REDUCING TARIFFS,
INCREASING U.S. EXPORTS
U.S. Exports to Australia Totaled $13.1 Billion for 2003
Washington, DC - In May 2003, the United States and Australia signed
a landmark Free Trade Agreement that eliminates more than 99 percent of
tariffs placed on manufactured goods. As a result of this agreement, trade
between these two nations is projected to rise substantially.
U.S. exports of merchandise to Australia totaled $13.1 billion in 2003,
up $1.3 billion from the 1999 level. Moreover, U.S. exports to Australia
are growing significantly faster than overall U.S. exports, with more
than thirty states exporting more than $100 million in goods to Australia
in 2003. Five of these states exported more than $500 million, and two
exported more than $1 billion.
