AARON
AND MOGG MAKE PROGRESS IN DATA PRIVACY TALKS
Washington,
DC - In two days of talks, Under Secretary for International
Trade David Aaron and the European Commission's Director General
for the Internal Market John Mogg made progress in resolving outstanding
issues in the proposed Safe Harbor arrangement. Both sides are
working to develop a package of Safe Harbor documentation by mid-November
that can be made publicly available. The EU intends to intensify
its dialogue with Member States and the US will continue its consultation
with industry ahead of the US/EU mid-December Summit in Washington.
"We completed
a thorough review of the documentation and made progress on issues
such as enforcement," Aaron said. "There are however important
issues that remain outstanding such as financial services."
Both sides
will be consulting their constituencies. Mogg added; "We will
be making these revised documents available to Member States,
the European Parliament and Data Privacy Authorities in the next
couple weeks." Aaron also said the the U.S. will be meeting with
its industry very soon.
Aaron
and Mogg have committed to stay in close contact over the coming
days and weeks as they prepare for the Senior Level Group - a
US/EU bilateral working group - meeting on November 17 and the
December Summit. They have not yet set a date for a follow up
face to face meeting.
