Roy Sweatman
Roy was raised on a dairy farm in Northwestern PA and began his involvement with precision machining by going through a 4 year machinist apprenticeship at GE in Erie PA. Roy spent a total of 13 years at GE in various management assignments including Manufacturing, Purchasing and Production Control.
Following that, Roy was General Manager of a precision machining job shop in the Cleveland area.
In 1983 Roy purchased a small machine shop in Tampa with 5 employees and no CNC equipment. Since that time SMT (Southern Manufacturing Technologies, Inc.) has grown to over 100 employees utilizing 22 CNC machine tools to produce $13.3 Million in sales in 2012 primarily for the Aircraft, Aerospace and Defense industries. Along the way SMT was Tampa Small Business of the year in 1986, earned a spot on the INC 500 in 1988, received a Business Excellence Award from the Tampa Workforce Alliance in 2009, received a Technology Award from NTMA in 2009 and received a SHARP award from OSHA in 2010and again in 2013. SMT is registered to ISO 9001 and AS 9100.
Roy was the 2008 national Chairman of NTMA (National Tooling and Machining Association) and is very active in the association serving on several teams and boards. Roy is also Vice Chairman of NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills), Chairman of the local machine trades Apprentice Advisory Board, serves on the CTEF (Career Technical Education Foundation) Board as well as several other local Boards associated with Manufacturing and/or Workforce Development and is a member of Vistage Florida CE 2057.
