Carlos M. Cardoso is Chairman, President and CEO of global industrial technology leader Kennametal Inc. At the age of 17, knowing little English, Cardoso emigrated to the United States from Portugal to study at Fairfield University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, the first step to achieve his American Dream. Subsequently, he obtained a master's degree at Hartford Graduate Center; completed Cornell University's Executive Management Program; and was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Saint Vincent College.
Having lived and worked on three continents, Cardoso is a passionate advocate for American manufacturing. He emphasizes employees as his company's most valuable resource, and leads with a focus on 100% safe performance, for which Kennametal has been recognized among America's Safest Companies (EHS Today); the World's Most Ethical Companies (Ethisphere); and the nation's Outstanding Corporate Innovator (Product Development Management Association). Kennametal consistently gleans 40% of revenues each year from innovative new products delivering at least 20% improvement in performance.
Cardoso in 2012 founded Kennametal's Young Engineers Program to turn around outdated perceptions of manufacturing among American high school students with hands-on curriculum in advanced production, stressing viable career opportunities in modern manufacturing.
Named one of America's "Best Chief Executive Officers" (Institutional Investor), Cardoso serves as a member of the U.S. Manufacturing Council, as chairman of the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) and on the board of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). He also serves on the boards of Hubbell Inc.; Stanley Black & Decker; Fairfield University Charles F. Dolan School of Business Advisory Council; the Allegheny Conference; and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Council. Previously, he was co-chair of the Pennsylvania Governor's Manufacturing Advisory Council.
