John F. Smith, Jr., became Chairman of the Board of Directors of General Motors Corporation in January 1996.

Smith was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received his bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1960 and an M.B.A. from Boston University in 1965.

Smith is a member of Delta Air Lines, Hughes Electronics, Suzuki Motor Corporation and The Procter & Gamble Company Boards of Directors. He is a director of the Detroit Renaissance, the Economic Club of Detroit and the U.S.-Japan Business Council. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the United Way of Southeastern Michigan.

Smith is a member of the American Society of Corporate Executives, The Nature Conservancy Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of DB Capital Partners. He is President of the Beta Gamma Sigma's Directors' Table. In addition, he was awarded the distinction of Officer of the Legion of Honor by the President of the French Republic, as well as the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, Middle Cross with Star.
